Patience Class

Welcome to Patience class and the beginning of the Autumn Term and a brand new year at school!

My name is Mr McBride and I will be sharing the teaching in Year 5 with Miss Finch.

Year 5 is an extremely important year, as the children prepare for their exciting challenges ahead in Year 6 and, ultimately, to their secondary schools

Learning

In Autumn 1 we will be reading Cosmic, by Frank Cottrell Boyce.  This links to our Science topic of Earth, Sun and Moon and is all about a boy who, through various mishaps, find himself in space.  The writing centred on the reading of this book will involve thinking about the characters' feelings and also studying and creating information lealets.  The Science topic will be made even more exciting by a visit to The Planetarium at Greenwich. For the first time, we will also be linked with an author as part of the Book Penpals scheme.  The author will be writing letters to the children and they will respond.  Hopefully they will learn many reading and writing techniques from this partnership.

Reading

All pupils are expected to read, or be read to, for at least 10 minutes every night and a  comment written in their reading record book, along with your signature. Please ensure their reading book and reading record are in school everyday. Please support your child's reading by asking them questions about what they have read/you have read, as this will ensure their understanding of the text.

Homework

Homework is sent home on Fridays and should be returned by Tuesdays. This will vary between Literacy, Maths and Topic work. Each piece should take no longer than 30 minutues to complete and is an oppourtunity for your child to share their learning with you. Please make sure this book is looked after and their work is completed in line with the high expectations of the school.

Spellings and Times Tables

Spellings and timetables will be undertaken each week and children will be expected to learn these, as they will be tested weekly. Please work with your children at home to understand these words, their meanings and how they can be used in simple sentences. They will have their spelling test on a Friday and given new spellings for the week ahead. They will have their times table test every other week on a Friday morning.

PE

PE is on a Monday afternoon. Please ensure that your child's PE kit (named) is in school everyday and that earrings are removed on scheduled PE days. Children must wear appropriate PE kit - white top with black or red bottoms with plimsoles or trainers for each lesson. This half term, every other Monday, your child will be doing Basketball, focussing on the skills to pass and control a ball and also moving in to spaces.  The teamwork element of the game will also be a focus.  Swimming will start on Monday 23rd September and will be fortnightly.  Appropriate kit is required for this.

We look forward to working with you and your child this term and continuing in allowing your child to flourish and become a well-rounded individual.
