Patience (Year 5) Class & Home Learning
Welcome to Patience class and the beginning of the Spring Term.
My name is Mr McBride and I will be sharing the teaching in Year 5 with Miss Finch.
Year 5 is an extremely important year, as the children prepare for their exciting challenges ahead in Year 6 and, ultimately, to their secondary schools
In Spring 1 we will be reading Goodnight Mr Tom, by Michelle Magorian. This links to our History topic of World War 2 and is about an 8 year old boy who is evacuated to the country, staying with Tom and his dog Sammy. The writing centred on the reading of this book will involve thinking about the characters' feelings and also studying and writing letters and diaries. The History topic will be made even more exciting by a visit to The Imperial War Museum. We will also be continuing our link with author/illustrator Loretta Schauer as part of the Book Penpals scheme. The author will be writing letters to the children and they will respond. Hopefully they will learn many reading and writing techniques from this partnership.
All pupils are expected to read, or be read to, for at least 10 minutes every night and a comment written in their reading record book, along with your signature. Please ensure their reading book and reading record are in school everyday. Please support your child's reading by asking them questions about what they have read/you have read, as this will ensure their understanding of the text.
Homework is sent home on Fridays and should be returned by Thursday. This will vary between Literacy, Maths and Topic work. Each piece should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete and is an opportunity for your child to share their learning with you. Please make sure this book is looked after and their work is completed in line with the high expectations of the school.
Spellings and Times Tables
Spellings and timetables will be undertaken each week and children will be expected to learn these, as they will be tested weekly. Please work with your children at home to understand these words, their meanings and how they can be used in simple sentences. They will have their spelling test on a Friday and given new spellings for the week ahead. They will have their times table test every other week on a Friday morning.
PE is on a Monday afternoon. Please ensure that your child's PE kit (named) is in school everyday and that earrings are removed on scheduled PE days. Children must wear appropriate PE kit - white top with black or red bottoms with plimsoles or trainers for each lesson. This half term, every other Monday, your child will be doing gymnastics. Swimming will continue and will be fortnightly. Appropriate kit is required for this.
We look forward to working with you and your child this term and continuing in allowing your child to flourish and become a well-rounded individual.
