Gentleness Class

Happy New Academic Year !!

Welcome to Gentleness class and the beginning of the Autumn Term!

My name is Miss Long and I am the Year 2 class teacher. Our teaching assistant is Ms Sewell.

Year 2 is an extremely important year, as the children finish their time in Key Stage 1 and we aim to support them with fun and challenging lessons so that they are ready to move into Key Stage 2 .

In Autumn 1  we will be reading 'The Sweetest Song' taken from the book 'The Story Tree', which will allow the children to discuss fiction stories and fairy tales that they already know. Our second book is 'The Robot and the Bluebird' which will allow the children to think about feelings and emotions as well as showing their understanding of the book through retelling the story. In Science we are looking into Living Things and Their Habitats, which will be researching different insects and animals and their needs.  In Maths we will be focusing on the childrens basic number knowledge and then moving onto understanding place value. In this term the children will be focusing on and learning the 2x table and the 5x table.

All pupils are expected to read, or be read to, for at least 10 minutes every night and a  comment written in their reading record book, along with your signature. Please ensure their reading book and reading record are in school everyday. Please support your child's reading by asking them questions about what they have read/you have read, as this will ensure their understanding of the text.

Homework is sent home on Fridays and should be returned by Tuesdays. This will vary between Literacy, Maths and Topic work. Each piece should take no longer than 30 minutues to complete and is an oppourtunity for your child to share their learning with you. Please make sure this book is looked after and their work is completed in line with the high expectations of the school.

Spellings and Times Tables

Spellings and timetables will be undertaken each week and children will be expected to learn these, as they will be tested weekly. Please work with your children at home to understand these words, their meanings and how they can be used in simple sentences. They will have their spelling test on a Friday and given new spellings for the week ahead. They will have their times table test every other week on a Friday morning.

PE is on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that your child's PE kit (named) is in school everyday and that earrings are removed on scheduled PE days. Children must wear appropriate PE kit - white top with black or red bottoms with plimsoles or trainers for each lesson. This half term your child will be doing Gymnastics focusing on the movement of the body, coordination and balance.

We look forward to working with you and your child this term and continuing in allowing your child to flourish and become a well-rounded individual.
